PERIODONTICS

Periodontics is a dental medical-surgical specialty that studies the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and conditions affecting the tissues that support the tooth bodies (gums, periodontal ligament, cementum and alveolar bone) and substitutes implanted, for health maintenance, function and aesthetics of teeth and adjacent tissue.

The Periodontology is emerging contemporary specialty of dentistry to support the study of scientific evidence on the state of healthy and diseased periodontium.

The main periodontal diseases affecting dentition are periodontitis and gingivitis

Today with the advent of implantology periodontics is also responsible for the prevention and treatment of diseases such as periimplant disease.

Periodontal disease manifests as gingivitis (inflammation and bleeding of the gums without affecting the bone) or periodontitis where bone destruction occurs which supports the tooth. If not treated on time can result in tooth loss.

A periodontal treatment is from the correction hygiene technique for controlling plaque, to the elimination of triggers it (dental calculus or tartar and periodontal pockets).
